Metabolism is a word we hear frequently, but do we really know what it means to our health?
Our clients define it as:
‘The speed you burn energy’
‘It’s different for everyone’
‘Metabolism is how fast you breakdown food and burn what you’ve eaten’
‘It’s how prone you are to gaining or losing weight’
These are not wrong at all. An online search describes metabolism as “the chemical processes that occur within a living organism to maintain life”. When you say it like that it all sounds so much more complex and serious, and it is!
Your body converts the food and water you’ve consumed and uses it to power everything within your body, either using it immediately, or storing it for later.
Broadly speaking it:
- Breaks down food/particles into smaller molecules to be used in bodily reactions – catabolism
- Builds things, so combines molecules in order to grow more cells – anabolism, think building muscle
To be clear, it’s pretty much the number of calories your body needs a day to keep all functions running effectively including; thinking, breathing, and digesting.
This is what you can do now to boost your metabolism:
- Consider what you are putting into your body to the amount your body is using. That means taking a look at the food and drink you are having in comparison to your current activity levels. Is there a little tweaking needed?
- Promote quality sleep. 7-9 hours of sleep allows your body to rest and repair from daily challenges. Sleeping can support the regulation of your body’s functions. You will also have a shorter window to limit excess intake of foods.
- Exercise. Something as simple as taking the stairs rather than the lift for example. Short bursts of repeated exercise can have positive health benefits.
But what can you do if you’ve tried all of the above and you’re still not feeling quite right?
Hormonal imbalances, and other imbalances within the body are often driven by faddy diets, yo-yo weight loss and weight gain. These affect how efficiently you are metabolising foods.
Leptin, Grehlin and Insulin are 3 hormones that play a significant role in metabolism, fat storage, cravings and hunger. Metabolic Balance® addresses and re-sets these hormones allowing you to burn fat more efficiently (lipolysis) restoring balance and weight adjustment is achieved.
